INTRODUCTION
Uttar Pradesh, with a nearly 20 crore population, is the most populous state in the country. In India, the State of Uttar Pradesh (UP) leads in cancer burden among all other Indian States; almost 25 % of cancer patients in Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH), Mumbai are from Uttar Pradesh. The state is reported to have the maximum number of cancers and cancer-related deaths. It is estimated that Uttar Pradesh will have about 1.5 lakh new cancer cases every year. However, there is an acute shortfall of comprehensive cancer care facilities in the state of Uttar Pradesh and adjoining areas. Thus, was the need to have state-of-the-art cancer centers in Varanasi, UP.
For the resolution of this problem, the Parliamentary Committee on Science and Technology had entrusted Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai under the leadership of the Prime Minister Office of, Government of India, to lead the effort to create adequate infrastructure and train work force in the field of Oncology. To address the growing problem of cancer and lack of adequately trained manpower, Tata Memorial Centre (Grant-in-Aid Institution under Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India) has established Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital (HBCH) and Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Cancer Centre (MPMMCC) at Varanasi with the aim to offer state of the art patient care services, high-quality education and cutting-edge research in the region of Uttar Pradesh. These cancer centers will also cater to the adjoining regions of Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Bihar.
Fifteen (15) acres of land within the 1360-acre campus of BHU was donated to the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India (GOI) to construct a cancer hospital with the latest and modern facilities. The construction cost was borne by the Tata Trusts and the hospital is managed by the Tata Memorial Centre (TMC), Mumbai.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of MPMMCC was made on 21st September 2017. The construction by Tata Trust began in April 2018 and was completed in a record time by end of February 2019.
During the same period, and as part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Indian Railways and Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai, the erstwhile Indian Railways Cancer Institute & Research Centre was developed as HBCH, under the management of Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai. The renovation cost and the cost of the equipment installed in HBCH were borne by Tata Trust.
THE HOSPITALS
HBCH was commissioned on 1st May 2018 as a 179-bedded hospital. Both HBCH and the 352-bedded MPMMCC were formally inaugurated by Honourable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi Ji on Tuesday, the 19th February 2019, in the presence of the Honorable Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Shri. Yogi Adityanath; the Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy (GOI), Dr. KN Vyas; Head, Tata Trusts, Shri. Ratan Tata; Vice-Chancellor (BHU), Mr. Rakesh Bhatnagar; and, the Director Tata Memorial Centre, Dr. RA Badwe. The Honorable Prime Minister also unveiled the book on this inaugural occasion, "Where Light Enters The Earth" on the Temples of Healing & Tributaries of Trust, curated by Ms. Nishu Singh Goel.
The second cancer hospital in Varanasi was inaugurated by the Honorable Prime Minister, Shri. Narendra Damodardas Modi has been named the Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Cancer Centre (MPMMCC), in honor of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya (1861-1946), an Indian educationalist, a past Dean of the Law School at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and past President of the Indian National Congress (INC).
The distance between HBCH, Varanasi, and MPMMCC, Varanasi is about 8 kilometers with a driving time of 20 minutes. There is very good road connectivity between the two hospitals. Both HBCH and MPMMCC are working as complementary units under the administrative control of the Director, HBCH & MPMMCC.
Our hospitals cater to the "cancer belt of India”, a population of nearly 40 crore people living in the States of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, etc. The area not only has the highest burden of cancer cases but also is plagued with an acute shortage of trained manpower to deal with the management of cancer. The situation is going to worsen in the next couple of decades due to rapid urbanization in these areas. Through our twin hospitals, we are bringing comprehensive and very high-quality cancer care at affordable costs to the doorsteps of patients of Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), its neighboring districts, and adjoining States

MAHAMANA PANDIT MADAN MOHAN MALAVIYA CANCER CENTRE, VARANASI
MPMMCC, Varanasi is situated at Sundar Bagiya on the campus of Banaras Hindu University. The building was constructed by Tata Trusts in a record time of 10-months. It has four different blocks with the distribution of various facilities as under:
